Learn about Charles Messiers Catalog of Objects

In the mid-18th century, astronomer Charles Messier began studying the sky under the direction of the French Navy and its astronomer Joseph Nicolas Delisle. Messier was taxed with recording the comets he saw in the sky. Not surprisingly, as he studied the heavens, Messier came across a large number of objects that werent comets. Key Takeaways: The Messier Objects The Messier Objects are named for astronomer Charles Messier who compiled his list in the mid 1700s while searching for comets.  Today, astronomers still refer to this catalog of objects as the M objects. Each is identified with the letter M and a number. The most distant Messier object that can be seen with the naked eye is the Andromeda Galaxy, or M31.The Messier Objects catalog contains information about 110 nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. Messier decided to compile these objects into a list that other astronomers could use as they searched the sky. The idea was to make it easier for others to ignore these objects as they, too, looked for comets. This list eventually became known as the Messier Catalog, and contains all objects Messier viewed through his 100-mm telescope from his latitude in France. First published in 1871, the list has been updated as recently as 1966. What Are the Messier Objects? Messier cataloged an amazing array of objects that astronomers still refer to today as the M objects. Each is identified with the letter M and a number. M13 is the brightest of the globular clusters in Hercules. It is the 13th object in Messiers list of faint fuzzies.. Rawastrodata, via Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike 3.0.   Star Clusters First, there are the star clusters. With todays telescopes, its fairly easy to look at many of Messiers clusters and pick out individual stars. Yet, back in his day, these collections of stars probably looked fairly fuzzy through his telescope. Some, such as M2, a globular cluster in the constellation Aquarius, are just barely visible to the naked eye. Others are easy to see without a telescope. These include the globular cluster M13, visible in the constellation Hercules, also known as the Hercules Star Cluster, and M45, commonly known as the Pleiades. The Pleiades is a good example of an open cluster, which is a grouping of stars that travel together and are loosely bound together by gravity. Globulars contain hundreds of thousands of stars and are globe-shaped collections Nebulae Clouds of gas and dust are known as nebulae and exist throughout our galaxy. While nebulae are much dimmer than stars, some, such as the Orion Nebula or the Trifid Nebula in Sagittarius, can be seen with the naked eye under good conditions. The Orion Nebula is a starbirth region in the constellation Orion, while the Trifid is a cloud of hydrogen gas that glows (it is called an emission nebula for that reason), and has stars embedded in it as well.  Ã‚   The Orion Nebula as seen by the collection of instruments aboard Hubble Space Telescope. NASA/ESA/STScI The Messier list also contains information about supernova remnants and planetary nebulae. When a supernova explodes, it sends clouds of gas and other elements hurtling through space at high speed. These catastrophic explosions occur only when the most massive stars die, those that are at least eight to ten times the mass of the Sun. The best-known M object that is a supernova explosion remnant is called M1 and is more commonly known as the Crab Nebula. It is not visible to the naked eye but can be viewed through a small telescope. Look for it in the direction of the constellation Taurus.  Ã‚   Hubble Space Telescopes view of the Crab Nebula supernova remnant. NASA/ESA/STScI Planetary nebulae occur when smaller stars like the Sun die. Their outer layers dissipate while whats left of the star shrinks to become a white dwarf star. Messier charted a number of these, including the famous Ring Nebula, identified as M57 on his list. The Ring Nebula is not visible to the naked eye but can be found using binoculars or a small telescope in the constellation Lyra, the Harp.   You can see a white dwarf at the heart of the Ring Nebula. This is a Hubble Space Telescope image. The Ring Nebula consists of a white dwarf at the center of an expanding shell of gases expelled by the star. It is possible our star could end up like this. NASA/ESA/STScI. Messier's Galaxies There are 42 galaxies in the Messier Catalogue. They are classified by their shapes, including spirals, lenticulars, ellipticals, and irregulars. The most famous is the Andromeda Galaxy, which is called M31. Its the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way and can be seen with the naked eye from a good dark-sky site. Its also the most distant object that can be seen with the naked eye. It lies more than 2.5 million light-years away. All other galaxies in the Messier Catalogue are visible only through binoculars (for the brighter ones) and telescopes (for the dimmer ones).   At 2.5 million light-years, the Andromeda Galaxy is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way. The term light-year was invented to handle the immense distances between objects in the universe. Later, parsec was developed for truly huge distances. Adam Evans/Wikimedia Commons. A Messier Marathon: Viewing all the Objects A Messier Marathon, wherein observers try to view all the Messier objects in one night, is only possible once a year, usually from mid-March to mid-April. Of course, the weather can be a factor. Observers typically begin their search for Messier objects as soon after sundown as possible. The search starts in the western part of the sky to catch a glimpse of any objects that are about to set.  Then, observers work their way east to try and see all 110 objects before the sky brightens near sunrise the next day.   A successful Messier Marathon can be quite challenging, particularly when an observer is trying to find those objects embedded in the vast star clouds of the Milky Way. Weather or clouds can obscure the view of some of the dimmer objects. People interested in doing a Messier Marathon usually do them in conjunction with an astronomy club. Special star parties are organized each year, and some clubs give out certificates to those who manage to capture them all. Most observers practice by observing Messier objects throughout the year, which gives them a better chance of finding them during a marathon. Its not really something a beginner can do, but it is something to strive for as one gets better at stargazing. The Messier Marathons website has helpful hints for observers wanting to pursue their own Messier chase.   Seeing Messier Objects Online For observers who dont have telescopes, or the ability to get out and observe Charles Messiers objects, there are a number of online image resources. The Hubble Space Telescope has observed most of the list, and you can see many of the stunning images in the Space Telescope Science Institutes Flickr catalog. The Phone -Memory Snapshot - Free Essay Example

The Phone While I was a kid, my father got one of the first phones in the neighborhood. I can perfectly remember that wooden crates lacquered, mounted on the wall. The bright receiver was hanging on a side. I was still too small to reach the phone but I was always listening, fascinated, as my mother spoke to him. Then I discovered that somewhere inside this device lived an amazing person. Her name was Hello Central and there was no one thing in this world, which she would not know. Hello Central can tell you anybodys phone number and also the exact time . My experience with this spirit closed in a bottle came one day when, while my mother was visiting a neighbor and I was playing whit the tool bench in the cellar,I hit my finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible and there was no one around me to show any compassion. I walked around the house sucking on my sore finger until I reached the ladder. The phone! I quickly dragged up a chair from the living room in the lobby. I stepped on it, I forked out the telephone receiver and I put it to my ear. Hello, Central! , I shouted into the microphone which was just above my head. A click or two and then a low and clear voice answered me back. Ive hurt my finger , I whimper on the phone and tears overcame me soon, now that I had an audience. Your mommy is not home? , the question followed. Theres nobody home but me I stammered. . Are you bleeding? , the voice asked me and I answered that i am not. I hit myself with the hammer and now it hurts so bad. Can you open the cooler? she asked me again and I said I can. Then get over there and get a piece of ice and keep it glued to your thumb said the voice. Then I started to call Hello Central for anything. I asked help for my geography lessons and she told me where Bucharest was. She even helped me with my math . She told me that the squirrel that I trapped in a park the day before, eats fruits and nuts. Then came a day when Figaro, our canary, died. I c alled Hello Central and I told her the sad news. She listened to me and then started to tell me things that parents usually tell their children to calm them. I asked her, What happens to birds who are singing so beautifull and bring so much joy to people, why do they have o end in a pile of feathers on the bottom of a cage? . I think she understood my feelings, because she slowly answered back,Doru always remeber that there may be other worlds in which they can sing. Another time on the phone,Hello Central and the Central answered with a well known voice. How do you spell the word price? I asked. All this happens in a small town in Romania. When I was nine, we moved to the other end of the country, from Ploiesti. I missed a lot my friend . I leftHello Central in that box of mahogany wood from our old house. I never tried to do the same thing with our new modern and bright phone,in the new house. I had become a teenager but the memories of my childhood followed me everywhere. Often , in moments of uncertainty and helplessness I remembered that feeling of serenity and security, which we had at that time. I appreciated now how patient and sympathetic and good hearted she must have been for her to lose so much of her time with a little boy like me. After several years, I did go to Ploiesti again, this time to continue my college studies. I took the train there but we had to stop in Sibiu first. I had a half an hour between trains. I spent about 15 minutes on the phone with my sister, who lived there for a while. Then, without thinking, I dialed the number of operators in our native town and said: Hello Central! . Miraculously, I heard the same low and clear voice, that i knew so well saying this is the central. I didnt plan this but I heard myself saying: Can you tell me how to spell the word price? A long pause. Then, that soft voice answered me, I guess your finger has healed by now. I laughed, So you are, indeed ,I said. I wonder if you know how much you meant to me at that time . And I wonder, she said, if you realize how much your call meant for me. I have never had any children and i was really happy to get your calls, every day . I told her how much I thought of it along the years and I asked if I could call her again in May when I come back to visit my sister. With pleasure ,she told me, just ask for Anca. I returned to Ploiesti after three months and for my surprize another voice answered me . I asked for Anca. Are you a friend? she asked me back. Yes, a very old friend , Doru its my name. Sorry to tell you this Doru she told me but Anca had worked only part time in the last years, because she was sick ,and unfortunetlly she died five weeks ago. I was frozen for a second and then right before i was about to end the conversation she said, One minute, you say your name is Doru? My heart jumped and i quickly answered yes it is. Well,Anca left a message for you sir,she wrote it on a piece of paper in case that you would call. Ill read it to you. Her message was: tell him that they are other worlds in which you can sing. He will know what I mean . I thanked the operator and i hung up. I knew what Anca meant. Never underestimate the impression you did on someone. All this came back to me from an old photo that i have in one of the drawers. I realize now ,how much people can help each other, how much we can change if we just open our hearts. Its hard to acomplish that ,specially with the busy life we all have everyday, but a reflection always makes us think twice. I wish that all the people to be like Anca and even if i never met her in person she is always gonna be in my heart. The more years pass the more value she has for me. Don’t waste time! Children Who See Too Much - 1584 Words

What goes in the mind of a mother when she first finds out about her pregnancy? Maybe she might feel extremely happy or maybe this news hit as a shock to her. Regardless, the majority of parents always think if they will be able to provide an adequate childhood to their child. After reading the book Children Who See Too Much, I realize that children are very sensitive to their environment. In this paper, I will try to discuss certain concerns expressed by the author regarding exposure to violence to the children. To begin with, in the first chapter of this book, it is described that there are three levels of exposure to violence. These are exposure to media violence, community violence, and violence in the home. The media has been†¦show more content†¦Moreover, these are natural hazards and keeping kids away from the truth maybe equal to showing them an unrealistic view of the world. Nevertheless, there is a variety of programs telecasted on television. Therefore, saying that the exposure to television is solely responsible for encouraging violence would not be true. The selection of program plays a major role, due to television children get different learning opportunity. Education regarding the selection of the program is critically important for the caregiver of the child. I believe the internet is more popular among children as compared to the television. Moreover, there is a conscious effort made by organizations like Public Broadcasting Service to bring a collection of age ap propriate shows for children. Here I am not trying to say that television shows are completely good for children, my point is that this facility should be provided but with good supervision. However, the synergistic effect of family and community violence and television violence is more dangerous for the child. In addition, to understand the effect of external environment on a child it is really important to understand how do they interpret the violent event. This can be explained with the help of Jean Piaget theory of cognitive development, according to which a child’s intellectual development is based on a sequence of stages that a child passes through on the way to achieving the adult capacity for

Parent Interview Free Essays

I interviewed a woman who has given birth within the past year so that I can relate the things I am learning In the classroom back to real life scenarios. Throughout the Interview I hope to obtain enough knowledge to be able to understand the blurting process a lot better. I hope that I will be able to know more about how real life situations when it comes to having a new baby in the house. We will write a custom essay sample on Parent Interview or any similar topic only for you Order Now I also hope to be able to understand what it is like for a mother to see their newborn baby for the first time. Else is a 23 year old female. She is Mexican and was born at Fremont hospital in Yuba City, CA. Her family is made up of her boyfriend, herself, and her 4 children. Her boyfriend is also Mexican and they speak mostly English inside of their home, but they also Include some Spanish. She doesn’t work at the moment, she currently Is enrolled In 5 classes at Yuba College and Is a full time mother to her 4 little ones. I interviewed Else outside of the cafeteria at Yuba College, It wasn’t exactly In privacy but she said It was perfectly fine. The total Interview took about an hour. Else was very nice and considerate, since she Is an ACE major also, she decided In the middle f the interview that she wants to take ACE 3 and learn about that the basics of every child. There was no problems with the procedure. RESULTS Else had a difficult delivery. She had a planned cesarean delivery, but she had a lot of tissue scaring which made it harder for the doctors to stitch the incision that was made. According to Papilla, a cesarean delivery is when doctors surgically remove a baby from the uterus through an incision In the mother’s abdomen (120). She ended up having to stay 4 days In the hospital because of the complications with the Incision. When Else first saw her daughter she was Instantly In love with the little Dutton nose and soft skin. Her newborn baby was seven and a half pounds, which according to Papilla that is the average for newborn babies in the united States (122). She gave birth to her at the same hospital she was born at, which is Fremont hospital in Yuba City. The only thing that she didn’t really like about her stay there was that the R. N. Name in at 4:30 in the morning to weigh the baby, she thinks that 8 am would be a more appropriate time. Else said that right after giving birth she was able to see her baby for about 10 seconds and then wasn’t able to see her again for 5 ours due to the complications that happened with the incision. She said that she had a big room and had It all to herself, which was extremely nice because her boyfriend stayed with her the entire time she was in there. S he said that he held her hand and kept her happy throughout the entire cesarean delivery. The day after delivery she was able to hold her newborn, but she was extremely sad because she was told that she Isn’t allowed to have any more children because of the scaring. Papilla vaginal birth after cesarean should only be attempted with caution (121). So, understandable as to why she isn’t allowed to have any more children. It surprised her, but she was fine with it because she was fine and her newborn was healthy. The baby was quiet as a newborn. Instead of crying when she’s hungry, she would move her head a lot. Right after child birth, she wasn’t able to move because her incision was constantly opening up, so her boyfriend did most of the work including changing diapers and bathing the baby. Papilla has stated that the father’s role has been increased since sass’s and that the father’s involvement with the child is related to the child’s well-being and physical, cognitive, and social development (139). She breastfed for 2 months, but then the baby decided that she didn’t want it anymore, so she had to switch to the bottle. She wanted to make sure that her newborn received the nutrients through her breast milk, so she was sad when she had to switch to the bottle. Papilla recommends breastfeeding to reduce the risk of obesity (147). Obesity runs in her family. It actually makes it easier because now she doesn’t have to worry about pumping milk before she goes to school. Overall, she is much more tired than she was before the baby was born, but she says that the babies mile makes her happier than ever before. The child changed Else’s life because she now has 4 little ones that she has to care for, but she said it gives her something to look forward to everyday. She doesn’t work anymore, because she decided to start school. She says that nothing has changed dramatically, but she is trying to maintain the same schedule as before. The baby is in a daycare, but the daycare is ran by the baby’s grandmother. Throughout the interview, I learned that there is many complications that can come with a cesarean delivery. I didn’t know that if you had to much scar tissue that it would be complicated to stitch back up. I also learned that babies freely choose if they want to be breastfed or bottle fed, I had never thought about the possibility of a child deciding that. It was interesting to see how everything related back to the book, especially since I don’t have any children of my own. Marmoreal, Papilla, Feldman. (2014). Hate crimes should not be puni Essay Example For Students

Hate crimes should not be puni Essay Hate crimes should not be puni Essayshed differently than other crimes. The actual crime should be punished, not the reasoning behind it. The idea of punishing crimes differently based on victims might make some people or groups feel that others are more protected or valued than they are. The concept of punishing crimes differently because of motive is senseless, unnecessary, and an injustice. Again, the actual crime should be punished not the reasoning behind it. Murder is murder, robbery is robbery, rape is rape, a gang attack is a gang attack, and premeditated murder is premeditated murder, regardless of motive (Staff Editorial 1). For example, Person A and Person B both assault innocent people. But while beating the life out of his victim, Person B calls him a Nigger. His crime is considered a hate crime. Consequently, his crime will receive harsher punishment. Despite why the crime took place, the point is that a crime took place. We will write a custom essay on Hate crimes should not be puni specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now No matter why the victim is chosen, he or she was still harmed, the family is still going to grieve, and someone must be punished (Staff editorial 1). Whether a person is killed for money or drugs or out of hate or prejudice, the fact still remains that he or she has been killed. With hate crime laws, the hate is being looked at, more so than the crime itself. Even though hate is a terrible thing to have in your heart, all Americans have the right to hate whatever or who ever they want (Hudson 1). Besides, if officials start punishing hate or unholy thoughts, they might as well make a new category of crime- thought crime. If this line of thinking were acted upon, then half of America would be behind bars. As stated above, the idea of punishing crimes differently based on the victim might make some people or groups feel as if others are more protected or valued than they are. This whole concept is hypocritical. If all Americans are to be created and treated equally under the law, then why, if killed, are some worth 50 years in prison and others worth life? Punishments should be the same regardless of what group committed what crime against whatever group or why. Officials should set standard punishments for specific crimes and those laws should be followed despite motive. Additionally, giving harsher punishment to certain people because of whom they killed or why will add fuel to the argument made by those who think that some are receiving extra protection or preferential treatment. This type of ruling is a slap in the face, or insult, to victims of crimes not considered hate crimes, by implying that victims of hate crimes are worth more (Reese 1). This would also make racist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan angrier and could create more crime (Leo 1). This would be doing more harm than good. Thirdly, the whole concept of punishing crimes differently because of motive is senseless, unnecessary, and an injustice. The act of increasing punishment for hate-motivated crimes is focusing on crimes that are already illegal (Reese 1). Thinking about a crime and executing it is already considered a crime in itself. This is called first degree murder. The convict is actually being punished twice, which is unjust. This concept is also unjust because the Constitution says that everyone has the right to a fair trial. Criminals can be prosecuted for multiple charges, but hate should never be one of them. In many cases, the maximum penalty for a crime is death. If the same crime were a hate crime, lawyers would want to increase the punishment. However, the death penalty cannot be worsened. .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 , .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .postImageUrl , .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 , .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318:hover , .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318:visited , .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318:active { border:0!important; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318:active , .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318 .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1a28d0ec37694f9368d292212b634318:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: In the late 20th century some people could be regarded or see themselves as victims of globalisation Essay This senseless concepts should have been more thought out. However, the death penalty cannot be worsened. .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b , .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .postImageUrl , .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b , .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b:hover , .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b:visited , .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b:active { border:0!important; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b:active , .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ube6ac7ab95affa3e1e7fe686c6a90e8b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Pro Choice Live Your Own Life Essay This senseless concepts should have been more thought out. Hate crimes should not be puni Essay Example For Students Hate crimes should not be puni Essay Hate crimes should not be puni Essayshed differently than other crimes. An Influential Person/Event Essay Example For Students

An Influential Person/Event Essay It seemed like it would make her die, just speaking it. So I didnt tell anyone, not even my best friends. At school I would slip into a fantastical dreamland, nobody there knew that I should be troubled, pensive. I put on my best front and paraded around the school halls with some sort of smile plastered on my face. At lunchtime Id stare at my food thinking that my friends should know. I thought of a million different ways to tell them. Each time that I came close to telling them, I would think about their potential reactions. There would be the normal lunchtime banter going on, complaints about the ranch dressing, and I would blurt out, Hey guys, my mom has breast cancer. The whole cafeteria would turn silent and the plastic forks would drop from their hands, making a sad little clinking noise. Then I would stare at my food mentally kicking myself for having opened my mouth. I chose to say nothing. I remember very clearly the day that I went to go sit with her while she got her chemotherapy. I only did this once because it was too hard for me. I walked down an overly-lit sterile hallway trailing behind my dad. When we reached her room I wished that I could just keep walking, pretend I hadnt seen her. I went in and sat down. Her shirt was partially unbuttoned so that the IV could be inserted into the porto-cath surgically implanted under her collarbone. She was hooked up to three different kinds of poisons, and one normal IV. There were some knitting things spread across her lap and the ever present bag of lemon drops was faithfully at her side. Her head was laid back in the chair, she was tired. She and my dad tried to involve me in some nice chit-chat, I met and shook hands with the doctors and nurses, Its nice to meet you Dr. McCoy. Yeah right. They complimented her on what a beautiful daughter she had. I blushed, smiled politely then excused myself to the bathroom. I wiped away my forming tears and gave myself a mental pep talk to be cheery. As long as I didnt look at her tired eyes I was OK. Half an hour later, she was done and we got to go home. I stayed alone in my room that night. Out of courtesy to my mom and fear that my friends would find out, I didnt have them over to the house for a long time. I didnt want them to notice anything, like the bottles of medicine all lined up at my moms place at the table. Each pill a tiny soldier waging war on my mothers body. There were always huge quantities of lemons in the refrigerator. A friend would come over, Hey Karen, why so many lemons? Its the middle of winter! I couldnt risk having to explain to them that the taste of lemons made my  mom less nauseous. The ceiling of the bathroom had hair on it. She tried so hard to camouflage her hair loss by blow drying her hair for over half an hour every morning. She would turn her head upside down, use some hairspray, then blow dry, then more hairspray and more blow drying. I dont think she realized her effect on the ceiling. Eight months after she had discovered the tumor, she was done with treatment. Eventually her hair began to grow back in. She and I played with new ways to fix her short hair and since it grew in curly, we referred to that phenomenon as, Post-chemo curls. We were both disappointed a few months ago when it dawned upon the two of us that the curls were finally falling out. So she got a perm. .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf , .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .postImageUrl , .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf , .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf:hover , .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf:visited , .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf:active { border:0!important; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf:active , .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4b1732dbccdef7668e092d77c5e7e7bf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Technology vs Humanity EssayI became best friends with my mother during the course of the cancer. I really grew up during those eight long months of fixing the family dinners, trying to be strong for her and trying to take over certain aspects of her role as mom when she couldnt. I think that while hard to endure, her cancer has been good for the family. It pulled us all together when we needed to be a strong unit. Today I think that all of us treasure more the moments that we have together. Instead of putting my feet down and complaining, I look forward to every Saturday that my mom and I go do errands together. After school some days I drive half an hour to go visit her in her office so shes not lonely, and sometimes I bring a bag of lemon drops, our favorite candy.
